Leader And Leadership Theories

leadership theories There have been developed many leadership theories to explain importance of leader and its role in an organization, especially when the team is working on specific projects that require constant attention and alteration to allow the project to progress in the most desired way. A leader of a team can be experienced or inexperienced; however, no matter how experienced is the leader of the team, he/she must constantly improve to allow him/herself to be better than before so that he/she can help improving the working productivity of the team members as well as the task on hand as well.

The interest on leadership study has been increasing ever since the importance of a leader in the team is recognized by the organization as well as the public. Thus, in order to improve the leadership studies and in the same time, ensuring that the leaders in the organization can be constantly improved, several major Leadership Theories had been derived to serve as a reference for the leaders to improve their leadership skills.

Common leadership theories

One of the Leadership Theories derived is the “Great Man” Theories. This theory believes that most leaders are born, and it is almost impossible for trained leaders to be as good as born leaders. By this, the theory exposes the leaders to look up to born and experienced leaders and to learn more from them. Apart from that, the

Contingency leadership theory is one of the leadership theories with a totally opposite belief with the “Great Man” Theories. The Contingency Theory believes that there is no such thing as the best leaders and that the leadership skill of a leader of the success of the leader depends on various factors in the environment which the leader must respond differently in order to suit the need of the environment.

The Participative Theory is another leadership theory believing that the best leader is the leader who is concern towards the team members’ need and who constantly listen to what the team members have to say, be it the task on hand or their opinions towards the leader or the other team members. One benefit of this leadership theory is that the team members will be able to relate to the leader easily and in the same time, they would be able to respect the opinions and instructions given by the leaders willingly knowing the intention of the leaders. In fact, the most respectable leaders are leaders who can relate to the team members.
